[News]Google Driverless Cars to Become its Own Unit in 2016Google has been working on their own driverless cars for quite some time now, and they’ve been making some key hires in the past year as well as bringing their self-driving cars on into more cities for testing and such. It’s been proven that their self-driving cars have been involved in less fatalities than regular cars. Basically, stating that a computer driving a car is safer than a human driving a car. Google has been met with scrutiny by automakers over their driverless cars, but they are still looking to get into the car business. And in 2016, Bloomberg is reporting that Google will spin off their driverless car unit into its own unit under Alphabet.
In addition to making their driverless cars their own unit under the Alphabet umbrella, the company also wants to launch a ride for hire company similar to Uber. But instead of having drivers driving people around, Google would have driverless cars driving people around. Of course, before this can happen, they will need to get more states to approve driverless cars to be legal on public roads. Google has already logged around a million miles in testing these self-driving cars, but there’s still plenty more testing to be done. Car accidents account for about 33,000 deaths each year. Alphabet executives believe that self-driving cars can help reduce that number significantly. Self-driving cars have been involved in a handful of accidents, but it has been proven that it was not the driverless car’s fault, for the accident. Recently, China has committed to making a driverless bus that will be on the road in China in the coming years. So this could be the start of ending driving from one place to another. And it could save a ton of lives. Additionally, this would get rid of the need for us to buy cars, with Alphabet’s ride for hire service. You can summon a car and have it take you where ever. Similar to what Uber does not, but hopefully a bit faster. With it being a driverless car, it shouldn’t have issues with getting lost, as some Uber drivers have in the past. | |
