Smartphone technologies are getting better and better with latest innovations every day. With that smartphone storage had become a reason of inconvenience for many. OEMs like Meizu, Xiaomi, Apple etc are ditching SD cards on their flagships, cloud storage has become more important for their users. Services like Dropbox and Google Drive have already become widely popular among smartphone users.

Cloud Storage
Cloud storage is a model of data storage in which the digital data is stored in logical pools, the physical storage spans multiple servers (and often locations), and the physical environment is typically owned and managed by a hosting company. These cloud storage providers are responsible for keeping the data available and accessible, and the physical environment protected and running. People and organizations buy or lease storage capacity from the providers to store user, organization, or application data.
Cloud storage services may be accessed through a co-located cloud computer service, a web service application programming interface (API) or by applications that utilize the API, such as cloud desktop storage, a cloud storage gateway or Web-based content management systems.
And yes, to store and access data from cloud storage you need a good internet connection.

External Storage
As the name suggests, this is the external storage capacity of your phone. It depends on the compatibility of the memory card slot and to what extent is it supported. In simpler terms, it is the storage which can be removed easily by you (your memory card) and can be used for storing pictures, music, videos and the likes. You may or may not be able to install applications on it.
If you have OTG support for your device (now a days most of the devices support it), you can even use the memory of your USB device for storage.

So the question is

Will Cloud Storage Replace External Storage In Nearby Future?
