Hello there: Everything was fine up till today when I discovered I could not open my camera. It would open and immediately shut. I suspected it could be related to the gallery, and I might be right. Upon opening my gallery, all I get is a “layer”, like a 20 per cent grey screen over a blank screen. I can still make out the status bar underneath it. I have tried erasing data and caches for both the camera and gallery, to no avail. I’d show you screenshots but, of course, I can’t, since the gallery is dead. After getting home I attempted to plug it in to get the photos off my SD card. They are all still visible and functional in ES File Explorer. However, the phone is no longer recognized on Windows 10—also a strange occurrence since everything had been fine yesterday. It is very similar to this bug in 2018: http://forum.flymeos.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=43342 However, no amount of cache-clearing seems to help. I also noticed that I cannot save new APKs from my browser, so I can’t replace the gallery and camera with new APKs. Any thoughts are welcome. | |

Since I received no replies, here is what happened since May.
The usual remedies did not work, as noted above. I began with a factory reset. That lasted all of eight hours before the fault returned. I had downloaded Whatsapp and I suspected that caused the damage, since it’s a Facebook company—not exactly reliable. I reset the phone again the following week. That lasted eight days with no Whatsapp. However, the fault returned when I tried to take a photo. After that I took my phone to the shop where I bought it, since it was covered by a two-year warranty. They also got my M2 Note going again (it would not charge, despite new chargers, had not charged for at least six months, and showed 0 per cent charge at home; there it immediately showed 86 per cent charge and I bought a new charger! Inexplicable). I returned a few weeks later and collected it. It appeared they flashed the phone and it was back to brand-new. A factory reset, as Meizu has it, is not a true one: it resets certain things but if you have deleted some default apps, they will not return. This was a proper reset, with all the Google spyware back (which didn’t make me too happy!). This lasted all of 10 minutes. The settings’ menu would now shut itself and I could open nothing in settings. All I did was allow the updates to happen, deleted one game, and I saw a load of Google updates happening in the background. I let the global OS update run, but the settings’ menu would crap itself and close in a split-second each time. I had a fortunate flash of inspiration: what if I tried downloading the Chinese Flyme? Bear in mind that I have attempted this half a dozen times since 2018, including the very first day I owned the phone, and it has never worked, despite what people have said here. Even this time the update.zip package (which was incredibly slow to download compared with the M2 Note, where I was doing the same thing) returned an error message. I tried again. This time it worked. Everything functions again. The settings stay open, but, more importantly, all the other apps work, too. The global version is vastly inferior to the Chinese one, so I was happy to see everything I had become used to on my M2 Note return (and then some). It even downloads more quickly—I’m sure Google slows phones down. Instagram, for example, was never compatible with Flyme’s global version when it came to video frame rates—that bug is now gone. Camera and gallery are fine. I’ll update this thread if anything negative happens but it looks like the trick is to try the Chinese Flyme updates for 18 months till you get one that works on a fluke and that will fix your phone! Or, ideally, just buy a Chinese-spec phone to begin with, and boot it up in the language you use. | |
