Rooting simply removes a restriction after which the user can run the commands as a root user. For example a user can run a "chmod" command to change the execution permission of a file from "user" level to the "root" level. After which the executing file can access the "kernel" level api's and can almost modify anything may be everything.

Rooting gives users the power to use Android at will. So root your phone but use its powers wisely. Install only the apps which are proven and improves the system. Do not install everything that requires root permission just for fun, because you are possibly opening the doors for self destruction.
