The ugly truth about screen protectors

While the choice to use a screen protector on your smartphone is a personal choice, there are some factors to consider when making that decision. What can you get with screen protectors on phones that use standard soda lime glass that you don’t get with Corning® Gorilla® Glass? Let’s take a look:

1.    Incomplete coverage on the edges precisely where breakage is most likely to occur.

2.    Air bubbles: Bubbles on your screen are distracting and impair the user experience.

3.    Trapped fibers, dust and other debris: Yuck – who wants to have the past stuck to their screen?

4.    Unsightly residue: Not only is residue unappealing, it also affects the tactile performance of your device.

5.    Nearly 10 times the haze: More haze means you get a less than clear viewing experience.

And that’s when the screen protector is brand new. When you throw your phone in say, your purse or pocket, you’re more likely to see highly visible scratches and delamination on a screen protector. Additionally, soda-lime glass has much less retained strength than Gorilla Glass, which means it more likely to break after being damaged, even with a screen protector.

And on top of it all, the average cost of one screen protector – which you may need to replace in as little as a few months - is more than two times the premium price of Gorilla Glass, which can last the lifetime of the device.

So get a screen protector for more issues than you bargained for, or get Gorilla Glass for superior damage resistance.
