For android devices I prefer at least a minimum 5 inch size screen coz of my fat fingers, if below 5 inch if it is an iOS device that would be fine since I don't have any issues typing on a small screen using an iPhone from my previous 3GS and 4S may be iOS is just accurate when it comes to touch screen.

But it doesn't change the fact that larger phone simply wouldn't fit my front jeans pockets or it would be very uncomfortable. I think the max for me is a 150x75-80mm dimensions footprint and it's up the manufacturer how large display they manage to fit there | |

The overall dimensions of the phone is more important than the screen diagonal to me. If it has small bezels and capacitive keys then I'm fine up to 5.7 with the ideal being 5.5, else it's 5 at most.

I'm using a 5.5" and find really well, but I think the best screen size is 5.2", a good compromise to the advantages of having a big screen and using fast screen also with only one hand like smaller screen
