Unless you're one of life's high fliers, who struts around not giving AF because you've got unlimited data on your phone, you might want to read on.

Because new research has identified which apps drain the most data, and we're about to out the greedy buggers for who they really are.

The Big culprits:
An app called Opera Max claims that Facebook Messenger, Gmail and WhatsApp are the main culprits when it comes to eating up those megabytes. But in case you thought the solution was to exit all those bloody group chats you're in and generally use Whatsapp less, sorry love but that won't help.
Because the sneaky thing is, the apps eat away at your data allowance even when you're not using them.

There is a background story!
In fact, Opera Max revealed that as much as 30% of all our monthly data usage is from apps running in the background.

According to Opera Max's research, more than 50% of the data Whatsapp uses occurs when it's running in the background, while a staggering 73% of Facebook Messenger and Gmail's data usage comes from the times the app is inactive. The sly foxes.
But what the bloody hell could it be doing to waste all that data when you're not even using the app, we hear you cry?

Why apps run in background?
Well it turns out many apps stay active to ensure it gathers all the latest content, ready when you do start using it. Like how Whatsapp gathers together all your incoming messages, and Gmail does the same with emails, and they're there waiting for you when you open the app.

All you can do is develop a penchant for turning your phone onto aeroplane mode any time you're outside the vicinity of a decent wifi connection.
That should outsmart them. Mwahahahaha.
