Qualcomm files additional patent actions against China's Meizu Edited by sathishkumar at 2016-10-15 13:32
Qualcomm said late Friday that is has expanded its patent infringement action against Chinese smartphone maker Meizu, including taking its case to the International Trade Commission.
The move comes after Qualcomm filed legal actions in China against Meizu in June, alleging patent infringement and refusal to negotiate a patent license with Qualcomm. That case is pending.
Qualcomm filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission alleging patent infringement by Meizu. It filed a similar case in Germany. In France, Qualcomm is seeking an infringement-seizure action to obtain evidence for a possible lawsuit there.
"Meizu's refusal to negotiate a license agreement in good faith and its sales and distribution of infringing products around the world leave Qualcomm with no choice but to protect our patent rights through these additional legal proceedings," said Don Rosenberg, Qualcomm’s general counsel, in a statement.
Qualcomm holds a large patent portfolio for 3G and 4G wireless technologies. It negotiates license agreements for use of its patents with smartphone makers, including most of the top 10 handset sellers. Meizu was the ninth largest seller of smartphones in China as of the first quarter of this year, according to Cowen & Co.
