With the introduction of Exynos chipset series, Samsung forayed into mobile technology. After successfully demonstrating the Exynos 7420 octa-core processor in its own Galaxy S6 series, the South Korean tech giant is ready with the new Exynos 8890 premium processor. Since the new processor powers only high-end phones, Samsung is also looking to fulfil the demands of budget premium devices with the new Exynos 8870 chipset.

Rumours have it that smartphone companies Meizu and Lenovo are already interested in using the yet-to-be-launched Exynos 8870 in their respective phones planned for 2016. The Exynos 8870 appears to be a toned-down version of the powerful Exynos 8890, which uses 14nm FinFET fabrication process and 64-but ARM v8 architecture. The composition of Exynos 8870 is unknown but it is expected to be powerful enough to be featured in some flagships.

According to a report from Chinese publication MyDrivers, Meizu will use the Exynos 8870 chipset in its upcoming Meizu Pro 6 smartphone. Meizu Pro 5, which was launched in September, used Exynos 7420 SoC and offered premium specs such as 5.7-inch Full HD display, 3GB/4GB RAM, 21MP camera and 3,050mAh battery. Meizu's flagship device was only launched in China for CNY 2,800 but the international availability is undetermined at the moment.

Where companies like Qualcomm and MediaTek are powering most mobile devices in the industry, Samsung is looking for new clients to use its Exynos chipsets. BlackBerry is also reportedly testing Samsung's Exynos chipset in its devices. If things go as rumoured, 2016 may turn out to be a great year for Samsung in the mobile chip business.
